A Vision of Safety

Here at ONCORE, there is only one thing more important than the perfect pour: the safety of those placing it. Concrete construction is one of the most dangerous trades in the business of building. It is for exactly this reason that ONCORE requires all of our new hires to undergo a rigorous safety orientation program before setting foot on a jobsite.  We also require that all of our superintendents complete the OSHA 30 hour and all of our foremen and field engineers are required to complete the OSHA 10 hour.

Beyond these safety measures, ONCORE holds weekly safety meetings on site and monthly safety meetings at our headquarters in Bladensburg, Maryland for all of our supervisors and job foremen.  Our bonus program for all of our superintendents and foremen is also based on safety record.  We also boast a 100% eye protection policy with strict corrective measures for those caught in viloation of the policy.

ONCORE operates on a drug free work force requiring new hires to pass a drug screen along with all parties involved in an accident.  Random drug testing is also employed to keep our staff completely drug free.  All safety violations are pursued swiftly and aggressively.

Each new employee is required to wear a red dot on the back of his/her hard hat for a period of 60 days from hiring on the completion of orientation and Hazcom (MSDS). Research has found that the most accident prone employee is the one who has less than 60 days of service with our company. Therefore, we identify them to our jobsite management staff and safety personnel for additional observation.

A Unique Commitment to Health

Each morning, 15 minutes before the start of the work day, the entire ONCORE team assembles somewhere on site for morning exercises. This is comprised of several stretches for legs, arms, and back; a few flexibility exercises and a short cardio to get the blood flowing before smoothing the stone. We’ve implemented this routine each morning so as to keep muscle injuries down and help make sure that all of our employees reach their families safely each night. Since instituting this program 6 years ago, we’ve seen a dramatic decrease in worker’s compensation claims and soft tissue injuries.

Reaching out to All

Along with strict enfocement of a 100% tie off policy, ONCORE has teamed up with the Miller fall protection company to create the “Miller Edge” system for fall prevention. Our Safety Director, Donald “Yankee” Mackay was personally involved in the development of the system while Miller manufactures and sells the equipment to all different trades. We are very proud of our contribution to this system and are very excited that it has taken off so well.

Wellness Program

The rising cost in health care in this country has all businesses looking for ways to cut costs regarding insurance. ONCORE’s unique approach to this problem has allowed that we can keep our health care costs down and still provide an outstanding Employee Benefits package. ONCORE has partnered with a firm by the name of Live Healthier to come educate our employees on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Everything from proper sized portioning to an easy and usable exercise regiment is covered in the meetings and information is regularly decimated keeping the ideas up to date and fresh in the minds of our employees. Perhaps the most aggressive aspect of the new wellness program is the company’s partnership with the American Cancer Society to administer a new smoking policy. BobMac has offered to foot the bill for whatever means of quitting tobacco an employee chooses. Starting in the summer of 2007, our smoking employees will have one year to quit using BobMac’s money to purchase whatever means they think will best serve them. After one year, those who quit will see no increase in their health insurance premiums or co-pays but those who choose to continue smoking will have to pay for their insurance a la carte. We’re very excited about the new program and are anxious to see the results.
